Japan Disaster Relief

It has been a week since the massive 9.0-magnitude earthquake occurred at the northeastern coast of Japan which creates extremely destructive tsunami waves which hit Japan. The earthquake and tsunami have caused  severe damage in Northeastern Japan, leaving thousands of people confirmed dead, injured or missing, and millions more affected by lack of electricity, water and transportation. At some area, it's even snowing. It's also not helping when there's a nuclear crisis unfolding in Fukushima.

Google has a Crisis Response page where you can find resources related to this current crisis. It's a fantastic page set up with all information such latest updates on the situations, important links and telephone numbers, transportation statuses links, shelters and even a person finder. You can also find links if you wish to donate to Japanese Red Cross Society, International Medical Corps, Unicef and Save the Children. All these within one page which is excellent!

The Embassy of Japanese in Malaysia has informations with regards to this as well with various links on how to put in your donations.

If you have PayPal account, you can also do so via them.

Helping the Haitians via PayPal, eBay, Amazon or Google Checkout

Following up on my yesterday's plug on how to help the Haitians, I did some searching and found out that one can donate via PayPal and eBay from PayPal's Blog. Read more here.

At Save the Children donation site, also noted that one can donate using Amazon Payments and Google Checkout (not sure what's this) other than PayPal.

If you're earning via your blog and have money in your PayPal account, you can try donating via Save the Children as PayPal will be waiving the payment processing fees for a limited time.

So hurry!

Thank you for all the loving kindness ;-)

Helping the Haitians

The earthquake that hit Haiti on 12 January 2010 was the most devastating news to begin the new year. I do not need to continue more over here, for the daily visuals that was published in the local newspaper, on the internet and telly were enough to touch all ours hearts. However, aid was slow. So we need to act fast.

In this time of need, here are a few organisations you can turn to by pledging funds to help the Haitians:

World Food Programme have emailed me as I was involved with the Menu For Hope projects. On their home page, there's updated info on the emergency operations to feed the Haitians. Click here to donate using your credit card.

If you have been reading the local newspapers, you would have come across UNICEF's appeal. So all you need is fill in the form and send your cheque. You can donate online via here using your credit cards!

Over the weekend, the wet market at my area were dotted by people dressed in dark blue tees and white trousers. They were from Taiwan Buddhist Tzu-Chi Foundation Malaysia, collecting donations from the market goers. If you don't see them in their smart uniform, don't fret. You can bank in your donation to their Maybank account 0040-6750-0119 with the payee as Buddhist Tzu-Chi Merit Society Malaysia. More info here.

Malaysia Red Crescent Society (MRCS) is appealing for donations for the MRCS International Relief Fund, in response to the emergency appeal launched by the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) for US$10mil (RM34mil) to assist some 100,000 disaster victims.

Donors can sent cheques or cash to the following address:

Secretary General
Malaysian Red Crescent Society
National Headquarters
32, Jalan Nipah off Jalan Ampang
55000 Kuala Lumpur

Cheques should be made out to the “MRCS International Relief Fund” with ‘Haiti Earthquake’ written at the back or bank in into
Account No : 5144 - 2210 – 2657

** Donations to the MRCS are entitled to tax exemption in Malaysia **

MERCY won't be able to send assistances to Haiti according to it's President as stated here. So try the above means.

Please Help Baby Kai Xin

This morning, my colleague passed me today's copy of Sin Chew Jit Poh. On the front page of Metro Edition section featured my friends', Eric Loke and Lee Huey Jing, plight of their baby girl Loke Kai Xin. The following are the scanned copies of the article (please click to expand the copy):

sinchew-kaixin Part 1 of 3

sinchew-kaixin Part 2 of 3

sinchew-kaixin Part 3 of 3

I've a copy of the original email which I've summarised together (in English) with the latest update that I've gotten from Eric this morning.

Their daughter Loke Kai Xin was diagnosed with biliary atresia at 3 months old and a Kasai procedure was done in February then. Unfortunately, the procedure did not cure her condition and was advised liver transplant as her last and only option.

Due to her weight, she was advised by University of Malaya Specialist Centre (UMSC) to seek medical help from Singapore. After the first round of pre-assessment at National University Hospital S’pore (NUH), Eric's liver artery is too short and narrow if the surgeon cut out the left lobe of the liver. Although there is no risk for Eric but it will lead to future complication and the result will not be good for Kai Xin. Huey Jing went thru all major pre-assessment and found to be a favourable donor prior to the rest of the assessments to be done at a later date.

At the moment, Kai Xin's current weight is 7.2 kg inclusive of water in her tummy and they need to get Kai Xin to gain her weight to 8kg before the liver transplant team can arrange the date to have the transplant done. Kai Xin is staying in UMSC as they need to use a feeding pump to feed her gradually during the night (less milk volume but increased feeding frequency) plus maintaining her health level to be as good as possible.

The total cost including post-operations and follow up expected to be at the region of RM500k (liver transplant and pre-assessment SGD200k, post ops, follow ups etc) or more due to her age. This amount is just too high for them to bear in full moreover they've spent more than RM50k up till now for Kai Xin's medical expenses; therefore they are appealing for help. As of last week, the figure had barely touched 10% of the amount needed. Hopefully with their plight highlighted in Sin Chew Jit Poh, the desired amount can be met.

A fund has been set-up for Kai Xin with following bank account details. For those who are keen, kindly deposit your donations (cash or cheque) in favour of:

Name: Loke Kai Xin
Maybank Berhad A/C No.: 1-14013-213313

Note: If you're using Maybank2U/ATM, you'll see Lee Huey Jing displayed instead.

May the compassion of Lord Buddha cure all illnesses that is afflicting Loke Kai Xin, and may she has a speedy recovery, long and healthy life!

The Terry Fox Run is an annual non-competitive charity event held in numerous regions across the globe in commemoration of Canadian cancer activist Terry Fox, and his Marathon of Hope, and to raise money for cancer research.

The run itself is informal which means that the distance often varies, usually between 5 and 15 kilometres; participation is considered to be more important than completing the set distance.

Unlike other major fund raising events, the Terry Fox Run has no corporate sponsorship. This is in accordance with Terry Fox's original wishes of not seeking fame or fortune from his

Excerpt from Wikipedia

Terry Fox was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, and raised in Port Coquitlam, British Columbia, a community near Vancouver on Canada's west coast. An active teenager involved in many sports, Terry was only 18 years old when he was diagnosed with osteogenic sarcoma (bone cancer) and forced to have his right leg amputated 15 centimetres (six inches) above the knee in 1977.

While in hospital, Terry was so overcome by the suffering of other cancer patients, many of them young children, that he decided to run across Canada to raise money for cancer research.

He would call his journey the Marathon of Hope.

After 18 months and running over 5,000 kilometres (3,107 miles) to prepare, Terry started his run in St. John’s, Newfoundland on April 12, 1980 with little fanfare. Although it was difficult to garner attention in the beginning, enthusiasm soon grew, and the money collected along his route began to mount. He ran 42 kilometres (26 miles) a day through Canada's Atlantic provinces, Quebec and Ontario.

It was a journey that Canadians never forgot.

However, on September 1st, after 143 days and 5,373 kilometres (3,339 miles), Terry was forced to stop running outside of Thunder Bay, Ontario because cancer had appeared in his lungs. An entire nation was stunned and saddened. Terry passed away on June 28, 1981 at age 22.

The heroic Canadian was gone, but his legacy was just beginning.

To date, more than $400 million has been raised worldwide for cancer research in Terry's name through the annual Terry Fox Run, held across Canada and around the world.

Hands of Hope

Note: I've received quite a lot of emails enquiries but I won't be able to reply them at the moment since access to the net is limited at the moment. The streamyx line is fine but the PC is not and was sent to the clinic for the past few days but it seems that it's still not very stable. So I won't be able to reply your emails. I'm doing the best that I could at the moment, so please bear with me for the time being. Thanks.

I've promised the good people at United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to highlight about this on World Refugee Day on 20 June 2008 but since I did not have access, this will have to make do.

This June for World Refugee Day, be part of the Hands of Hope movement in support of refugees.

It’s hard to imagine what it must be like to be a refugee. To see your village torn apart by war. To escape under horrific conditions to an unfamiliar land where you don’t speak the language. To be alone, surrounded by strangers, not knowing who you can trust, not knowing what tomorrow will bring.

Yet for thousands of refugees in Malaysia and millions more worldwide, this is the story of their lives. But you can help bring happy endings to these tragic stories. There are so many things you can do, and one of them is by learning more about refugees.

You can start by viewing the Hands of Hope video clip (at YouTube or at the UNHCR Malaysia website This video clip blends powerful narration and music with beautifully-rendered graphics to tell a compelling tale of a refugee girl’s flight of terror from war and separation from her family, only to find greater uncertainty and danger while in exile. It was produced pro bono for the UN Refugee Agency by advertising agency EURO RSCG Kuala Lumpur, and has now been circulated worldwide.

It doesn’t take much to restore hope to refugees today. You’ve taken the first step by reading this and by wanting to learn more.

Go to to learn more about World Refugee Day and refugees, or send an email to to receive updates from us on refugees in Malaysia. Pass this message on to a friend and get the word out.

You can help turn their tragic endings into stories of hope.

Our Visit to Compassion Home

some of the children at Compassion Home

2 weeks back, we paid a visit to Compassion Home in Subang Jaya. A friend of mine, Y, organised this visit. She had arranged a McDonald's lunch for the kids and a few of us who have attended. Also in the line up were some fun and games conducted by a rep from McDonald's. Y's family had generously donated 6 month's worth of groceries and toiletries to the home.

6 month's worth of groceries and toiletries

I roped in a few other friends K, C and E to help out. Many thanks to their contribution too in getting gifts for the children and C for the lovely cake she had painstakingly decorated until 4am! We brought our kids along and they clearly enjoyed the games with the children of the home.

Game time Game in progress

It was great fun having to spend about 2 hours there, getting to know the kids, the caretakers, and how they manages them. Other than that, it was good to meet Y, K and C there. We have so much catching up to do. E can't make it with his family that day, what a pity. Otherwise, his kids would have fun there too.

The children sang us a couple songs as a token of appreciation before we left. I guess at the moment they won't need any groceries nor toiletries but should you decide to do something for these children, please contact Mr George, one of the caretaker of Compassion Home.

Menu For Hope 4: 3 More Days To Go

Dear readers,

Total raised so far is $43,115.00, quite far from last year's US$62,925.12! You have 3 more days to go to buy your raffle tickets for Menu For Hope 4. Every USD10 will earn you a bid for the prizes and pledges gathered by the international food bloggers.

I'm pretty glad that there were quite a number of bids for the 3 items that I've put up. I did a quick check of the number of bids for them. As of now the count stands at:

AP21 10 Set Dinners from Zuup - 4 bids
AP26 Babe_KL's Homemade Choc Chips Cookies - 8 bids
AP37 RM500 Dining Voucher from Elcerdo - 16 bids

Come on, I'm sure we can do better than this! We are hoping to generate at least 20 bids per item, so please help us feed the children.

To all my friends and readers whom have donated, a simple 'Thank You' would be an understatement for the magnanimity. Being a person who believes in 'paying forward', may you be blessed with abundance and may all your obstacles be pacified so that you will continue this journey for the highest good!

Kindly refer Menu For Hope 4: Prizes and Pledges and Menu For Hope 4: Kick-off for further details.
